Companion Animal Welfare Fund: Victory

Announcing a major victory for animals in Michigan: the Companion Animal Welfare Fund (SB 350), sponsored by Sen. Valde Garcia and spearheaded by the Michigan Humane Society, was recently signed into law by Governor Granholm! 

This new law will allow taxpayers to either designate a portion of their state income tax refund, or make a voluntary donation, to a new interest-bearing Companion Animal Welfare Fund in the state Treasury, beginning in the 2008 tax year. 

Through monetary grants from this fund, animal welfare groups across Michigan will have the opportunity to receive funding for innovative animal sterilization and adoption programs that they otherwise could not afford.
